MENTAWAI ISLAND, INDONESIA
The Mentawai Islands are a chain of about seventy islands and islets approximately 150 kilometres off the western coast of Sumatra in Indonesia. Siberut at 4,030 square kilometres is the largest of the islands. The other major islands are Sipura, North Pagai and South Pagai. The islands lie off the Sumatran coast, across the Mentawai Strait. The indigenous inhabitants of the islands are known as the Mentawai people. The Mentawai Islands have become a noted destination for surfing.
Mentawai Island truly is a magical island destination so rich culture, resources, biodiversity, experience, interesting people, inspiration, and indeed wave quality. Cultural diversity makes our world an interesting and beautiful place. With it, aren't we all better of? Culture can be worn in many ways. The mentawai have an ancient and unique tatto tradition still practiced today. Because culture brings colour to the world. My grandparents have a very unique tattoo that is point-shaped all over their bodies (I missed my grandparents. :( ..)
In Mentawai island, most parents would shudder at the idea of their child wielding a machete. Mentawai children pick up a machete from a very young age and as a result by the time they are 4 or 5 they boast incredible dexterity with knife in hand. In fact I've yet to see any child of this age cut themselves, which works well considering how important this tool/ skill is to their survival in Mentawai. Traditionally, Mentawai children grew up venturing about the forest, developing an intimate understanding of the plants, animals, ecosystems and the way they behaved. For most Mentawai, this type of education is no longer available, which limits their ability to live subsistent life.
My fav food in Mentawai island is sagu. Sagu is highly nutritious, grows abundantly throughout the Mentawai Islands and is an integral part of their Indigenous culture - both gastronomically and spiritually. Sagu is a 'tree of life' for the Mentawai. How to cook sagu can be put into bamboo or into bamboo leaves then burned (My mom is a very good in cooking sagu with a very good taste hehehe)
How to get there?
From Jakarta, you should take a flight to Padang city (West Sumatera) and from Padang take a boat or ship to Mentawai island. In Mentawai Island, there is many part of island as well. And you should know first which part the island that you want to visit.
